In our Natural Metal Finish DVD we demonstrate the use of Alclad II Gray Primer. Our recommended application method was 5 psi and we stated that the subsequent metallic color coats could be applied immediately. We have just discovered that due to circumstances beyond the manufacturer's control, the formula for this primer was changed. The new formula apparently was not stable and while it performed as described above when we tested it, it will no longer produce a good result if applied as we suggest on the DVD. It is possible that acceptable results can be obtained if the primer is applied at a much higher air pressure (approximately 35-45psi) and allowed to cure for at least 24 hours , but we would still recommend avoiding this blend. The manufacturer has just developed a different formulation for the primer that we have tested and it performs as originally described , however, depending on your airbrush setup the pressure required may vary between 5-15psi. The picture below may help you identify which type of primer you have. Other alternatives if you wish to prime your model that have worked for us are Gunze Mr. Surfacer 1200 and the Alclad II Clear and Gloss black primers. None of these will allow you to immediately repair missed seams, however.
